HANDS ON HISTORY FOR SCHOOLS
Kids 8+ can experience an interactive workshop offering a lively and exciting romp through history that they will never forget
Cultybraggan Camp is the only preserved PoW Second World War Camp in Scotland. Built in 1941 by the Jewish Pioneer core, it housed 4,000 PoW’s between May 1944 and 1947. Known as the ‘Black Camp of the North’, it had a notoriously hard reputation housing dozens of SS officers, members of the Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe & Marine Corps. On this site, there were several grizzly incidents but ultimately under the guidance of Herbert Sulzbach, the camp story is one of redemption and the historic environment is imbued with the uplifting power of the human spirit. Between 1948 and 2004 it was run by the MoD as a training camp and was touched by every major post-war conflagration including Vietnam and the troubles in Northern Ireland.
In 2007 the camp was bought by the Comrie Development Trust on behalf of the local community. Peter Scally is a leading expert on military history with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the home front and frontline experiences of those caught up in war. Peter will deliver the ‘Hands on History’ workshops with an interactive living history exhibition for students lasting approximately 1 hour. Subsequently and weather permitting, the Comrie Heritage Group will take students on a tour of the camp (also 1 hour). The workshops support the Curriculum for Excellence in learning and hone responsible citizenship. This unique opportunity to visit a Second World War site in situ is not to be missed.
Workshops can be offered covering the First World War or the Second World War period.
