A brief history of the Comrie Community Website

 

The old website

The website domain name of comrie.org.uk was registered with the intention of providing a website for the entire community of Comrie village in Perthshire, Scotland. A locally founded firm, Unitech took over the name and initially it was used to promote the building appeal fund for the White Church on behalf of Comrie Community Centre.

Since first registration of this domain name (comrie.org.uk) which was launched in 1996, and administered by Ted Rushworth(external link), with the involvement of his two sons, "John Rushworth"(external link) and Ian Rushworth. Hosting was kindly provided by the local firm UniTech(external link).

In 2006 the website passed to the Comrie Development Trust, and the website hosting was provided by McLaren Management(external link).

August 2007 saw a new website and forum launch this site has been developed in conjunction with Tom Steventon and and is hosted by his company TBCWorkshop, Tullybannocher, Comrie, who continues to provide technical support for the site. Our thanks go to Tom for all his support.

It has always been the intention that this website should be run by local volunteers for the benefit of the entire Comrie community. Initially it was used to promote the building appeal fund for the White Church on behalf of Comrie Community Centre. Now it is particularly intended that new volunteers should develop the website in line with the aspirations of local groups, especially youth groups.

The new website

Ted Rushworth has, after many years, retired as the Website Editor, the new editor who can be contacted via Email: will take over, the intention is however to provide organisations with their own web pages and give training to a small group of people to allow them to maintain their own areas. This will include a Young Comrie Website through which it is intended to train some of the young to manage their own area of the site.

Purpose of this website

The site is primarily intended as an information resource for locals and visitors and for the use of local voluntary and charitable organisations. A facility is being developed to allow local businesses to become involved. The website will be available totally FREE OF CHARGE to voluntary and charitable organisations, and it is hoped that businesses using the site for advertising will make a suitable donation to the Comrie Community Centre, or other similar local organisations. The website itself will not be run as a business, it will remain a voluntary service supplied through the Comrie Community Council, and be run by the community for the benefit of the community.
