Comrie Millenium Footpath Association

The Association is a scottish charity creating footpaths for all in the Comrie community and for visitors to Strathearn.

The White Church

Comrie is situated at the western end of Strathearn in Perthshire where the river Lednock and the Water of Ruchill joins the river Earn. To the North is Glen Lednock sheltering under Ben Chonzie. West is the beautiful tree lined Loch Earn. South is Glen Artney where the wild stags roam. East are the rolling hills of Strathearn. Comrie is in the centre of an area of outstanding natural beauty. The area has a long history of visitors enjoying walking in the country.

Comrie is very community minded. Some of the projects undertaken by the community are: - The upgrading of the White Church as a community centre. In 1994 Comrie in Colour group was set up and have won a major prize every year since. Last year they were the winners of the Britain in Bloom competition, large village section. All the social groups and clubs in the village are well supported. Neighbourhood Watch groups are very effective in helping the community to help themselves. Each summer Comrie Fortnight group organises a series of activities for all ages ending with a spectacular parade of floats and bands all arranged by the community without the support of outside organisations. Comrie Millennium Footpath Association (CMFA) is a group run by a cross section of the community.

Over 60% of the community are over the age of 50. In the last few years Comrie has benefited from an increase in the numbers of young families. Walking is the healthiest and most popular activity. The area has over 75kilometres of road walks but less than 100metres of walks suitable for wheelchair users, mothers with children in pushchairs, and the less able walkers. CMFA was set up to address this problem.

Details of the five main walks starting in the centre of the village were presented to the community at a public meeting. Upgrading part of the Comrie Circular Walk to a standard suitable for wheelchair users, mothers with children in pushchairs, was proposed and adopted as the first project for CMFA. The project was given the name of ‘Lednock Millennium Footpath’. (L.M.F). This footpath starts in the centre of the village and follows the lane from the School to Laggan Car Park. It then follows the route of the Comrie Circular Walk to the weir on the river Lednock. From there the route of the L.M.F diverts into the woods to accommodate gradient management and then on to Laggan Wood. The site has very poor access. To build the L.M.F we must first build a temporary access road. This access road will be approximately 1300 metres long, starting at the old burial ground on the Milton/Balmuick Road and winds down through the woods to meet Comrie Circular Walk near the 9th tee on the north side of the golf course. When the L.M.F is built the access road will return to nature by planting native woodland seeds. A woodland walk will be created along the route of the access road.

The project also includes development of a picnic area, a nature trail for children with an outdoor study area. Sensory areas will be created along the route and viewpoints with seats will be opened up. Signs and information boards will be installed.

Legal access and management agreements will be entered into with the Landowners through which the Lednock Millennium Footpath and the new access route pass over. Our thanks go to-
Forest Enterprise, Comrie Golf Club, Mr Charles Robertson, Mr Fraser McGregor, and the owners of adjoining lanes and tracks.
