First Response manager Alan Moffat has been lobbying for a site for the village for some time now and following a successful meeting last Friday with the Scottish Ambulance Service and Tayside Fire and Rescue, the lifesaving facility is one step closer to being put in place.
“We have had a really positive response to the suggestion,” Mr Moffat told the Herald. “Ideally, we’d like a designated landing site in Comrie which will enable a helicopter to land at night.
“Tayside Fire and Rescue would lay out the landing guide lights should the need arise and put a system of work in place.
“Should paramedics decide it is in a patient’s best interest to travel to hospital via helicopter the facility would be available 24 hours a day.
“Six lifts were made in the area last year. Tayside Fire and Rescue currently provide such a service in Kinlochrannoch and having a designated landing site can mean the difference between life and death.
“Paperwork to say there’s a need for a site is currently going through the system and the next stage will be to carry out a survey of appropriate sites. We’d like to see this up and running as soon as possible.”
Community chiefs in Comrie are backing the idea. Councillor Brock told the Herald: “Comrie is a rural community and we are not within easy reach of a hospital. Having the means to land an air ambulance in the dark could make a massive difference for severely injured or ill patients. At the moment helicopters can land during the day but there is a need for them to be able to do so safely at night. Someone’s life could depend on this in an emergency.”
