Fatal Fire Update

The man who died following an explosion and fire at a recycling plant in Perth can now be named as 46-year-old Slawomir Szmeichel, known as Sławek to family and friends, from Perth.

The incident happened around 12.45am at the Shore recycling centre on Friarton Road on Tuesday, 28 February, 2023.

One man, aged 41, was taken to Ninewells Hospital and has since been discharged.

Sławek’s family said: “We’re heartbroken with the sudden loss of our loved husband, Dad, brother, son, and friend, without whom our lives will never be the same.

“Sławek will remain in our thoughts and our hearts forever.”

Detective Inspector James Callander, of Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team, said: “Our thoughts remain with Sławek’s family and friends at what is a very difficult time for them.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what has happened and these enquiries are being carried out in partnership with relevant agencies.”

 

Appeal for Information

Detectives in Perth are appealing for information after a break-in to a shop premises.

Thieves broke into the shop on Darnhall Drive in the city around 11.30pm on Wednesday, 1 March, 2023 and stole a four-figure sum of money.

Detective Sergeant Sean McCabe of CID said: “We are keen to trace three men who were seen in the area on scramblers or E-bikes.

“One is described as being of large build, wearing a black beanie style hat with white logo, black balaclava, a black hooded top with ‘Columbia’ printed in the middle, black trousers and yellow/black gloves.

“The second man is of slim build wearing a navy hat, thin black puffer style jacket, black gloves and black trousers.

“There is no description of the third man.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have CCTV or dash-cam footage from the areas of Queen Street, Glenlochay Road, Buckies Braes, Craigie Knowes Road around the time the break-in took place.”

UPDATES

Two women, both aged 43, were arrested after the vehicle they were travelling in was stopped on the A9 near Tibbermore on Friday 3rd March and found to contain Cocaine valued at £111,800. Both women were charged with being concerned in the supply of a class A drug and kept in custody to appear at Perth Sheriff Court.

A 48 year old man will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal for careless driving after a 1 vehicle road traffic collision on the C410 near Madderty on Friday 3rd March.

A 37 year old man was arrested for failure to provide a breath test and failure to identify the driver of a vehicle following a road traffic collision in Willoughby Street, Muthill on Friday 3rd March.

A 32 year old man was arrested for possession of a knife in Perth Road, Scone on Monday 6th March.

A 46 year old man was arrested for possession of a sword in Whyte Place, Milnathort on Monday 6th March.

During the last week 1 driver was found to be without insurance whilst another had no licence.

 

RECENT INCIDENTS

About 7pm, Thursday 2nd March, a number of windows were smashed at properties in Hay Street and Barossa Place, Perth. A group of 4 or 5 youths wearing dark coloured hoodies were seen to run off from the area. (CR/27438/23)

About 5pm, Saturday 4th March, a group of about 20 youths was seen causing around £300 worth of damage to tees and greens on Craigie Hill Golf Club, Perth.

Between 1am and 9am, Sunday 5th March, a lime green Ridgeback Mountain Bike was stolen from a shed in Hawarden Terrace, Perth. (CR/29209/23)

Between 12pm and 6pm, Monday 6th March, a Reebok I-Run Treadmill was stolen from outside a property in Stroma Court, Perth. (CR/28596/23)

Between 10:30pm, Saturday 4th and 9am, Sunday 5th March, a silver Skoda Yeti had 2 tyres slashed and bodywork damaged whilst parked in Mitchell Street, Crieff. (CR/28899/23)

About 3:30am, Monday 6th March, 4 persons were captured on CCTV forcing a shed open at a farm near to Carnbo and stealing a red Suzuki Quad Bike. (CR/29069/23)
